Purple Carpet Thyme and Landscape Fabric

We are considering laying down landscape fabric to deter weeds. After initially poking holes to plant the thyme will the landscape fabric inhibit it's further spread? I suspect it re-roots as it spreads, is this correct? Also - will this variety be suitable for a shaded location?

Thyme does root as it spreads. The landscape fabric will prevent rooting to a certain degree. I think you would be further ahead by putting down a fairly heavy mulch of bark chips as this will rot eventually and allow the thyme to root into the humus created by the decomposition. The thyme will be very etiolated in the shade and form a loose mat that weeds have no trouble establishing in.
