Richters is a third-generation family business, founded in 1967 by Otto and Waltraut Richter. What began as a small greenhouse operation soon flourished into a dedicated herb business, inspired by Mrs. Richter’s passion for growing unique varieties like lemon verbena, pineapple sage, scented geraniums, and many European medicinal herbs. By 1970, Richters published its first herb catalog, offering seeds and plants.
Since 1991, under Conrad Richter’s leadership, Richters has become a trusted and respected name in the herb industry, blending tradition and innovation with a focus on herbal education and a dedication to quality. Today, Conrad and Mama, alongside their son Kofi, uphold the family legacy, combining decades of expertise with modern approaches to inspire gardeners and herbal enthusiasts alike.
Richters has been a trusted source for herb and garden enthusiasts for over fifty years, offering a wide selection of high-quality and unique herb plants. Each plant is carefully grown and nurtured according to its specific needs, ensuring a strong start in your garden. Whether you're looking for culinary herbs, medicinal plants, or aromatic varieties, we are committed to delivering healthy, vibrant plants that will flourish in your care.
All Richters seeds are untreated, come from plants that have never seen chemical fertilizers or pesticides, and are not modified by genetic engineering. We test all of our seeds for germination rate and purity to ensure successful seed-starting and healthy plants for a productive, thriving garden.
Richters Herbs is proud to be one of the first companies to sign the Safe Seed Pledge. The Safe Seed Pledge is a seed industry initiative to protect the seeds and plants we humans depend on.
Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately people and communities.
