My neighbour just gave me stems of basil. At the tippy top I believe are seeds. Can I use these to grow more basil indoors this winter or do I have to start in the spring with plants I buy? How do I do this? Do I have to dry them first or just plant in soil now?
If the seeds are black and about the size of a pin head, then you can plant them now in sterilized soil, covering the seeds with about 2mm of soil. Put the pot into a warm spot, say above a radiator and in about half a week the seeds should come up. Then put the plants in the brightest spot you have and make sure the temperature does not drop below 50F (10C).
