How can I grow mint? How can I get seeds for mint?
Grow mint in a well-drained, but moist soil. It thrives in rich soil. If you plant it in the garden make sure you do something to contain it, otherwise it will be everywhere. I usually suggest that you remove the bottom of something like a large garbage can and bury the resultant tube into the soil, so that only the top 5cm (2") still stick up. Plant the mint in this enclosure. Make sure that during the winter no ice sheet forms inside the bottomless can, because it will smother the mint.
Most mints are complex hybrids and any seed from them will not come true. We manage to get seeds of the variety we call menthol mint (Richters' catalogue # S4041-001). It is a spearmint variety, but the majority of the plants will have a very pungent taste. The taste becomes milder on drying.
The tried and true varieties are all propagated by cuttings taken from chance seedlings that had a nice and novel taste and scent.
