Fig Husbandry

I have an edible fig bush in a big pot here in my house. I have never been able to find out how to treat it. It is growing and the leaves are healthy but it is becoming leggy and I would like to know how to repot it and what type of soil/fertilizer etc. I would use. Do I use compost in the mix? How do I prune it to keep it contained? It by no means needs pruning yet.
I have asked this of many horticulture 'experts' and have received no reply. I am looking forward to your reply.
I know nothing of this plant's type. I do know that it came from Israel.
Actually we only supply cultural advice on plants we sell since anything else would really become unmanageable.
Briefly, I grew a fig many years in a south facing window in ordinary tropical plant soil and it did well as long as I kept it evenly moist and even produced figs occasionally. I lost it when I let it dry out completely. Prune it to whatever shape you wish, but remember that fruiting may occur, as on my plant, only at the tips.
