Spruce Trees Grown from Cones

Do you know how to grow spruce trees from the cone?

In coniferous trees the seeds are at the base of the scales of the cones and are protected by the scales. During any dry weather in the fall and spring the scales will open and release the seeds. If you have a cone, pry open the scales and remove the seeds gently. Sow them on a rich humusy but sandy, well-drained soil press into the surface, water, drain cover with mulch or if in a pot enclose it in a clean plastic bag. If it is fall, put the bag with the pot outside in a shady spot and leave there until spring- when the seeds should germinate. If it is spring, just plant seeds and treat like any other seeds. If they do not germinate within 3 months, pop the pot into a plastic bag and put in the fridge for 3 months. After taking out into room temperatures the seeds should germinate.
