We are planning to start echinacea angustifolia from seed under fluorescent lighting. Will the seeds germinate under this type of lighting or is sunlight required? Do you have any other recommendations?
Any visible light will work. It doesn't even have to be strong; even a 60 watt incandescent lightn would work. Light acts as a signal to promote the embryo maturation process and the biological switch activated by light is only sensitive to presence and absence – not to intensity.
You may want to get a copy of our Ethrel seed treatment data sheet. It describes a procedure using a plant hormone that can improve and speed up germination. It is available from Richters free of charge with an order of E. angustifolia seeds.
