I am taking Benicar 20mg and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg (water pill). I am anemia and have horrible menstrual cramps and was told by my doctor to go to the health food store and find some iron pills that would help me with my iron deficient. At the health food store I was given blood tonic syrup (this is a chinese herb formula. The ingredients are below). I am not sure if this is okay to take at the same time. Can you please help me with this?
Ingredients: Dong Quai ,liquorice root, astragalus, rehmannia, White peony root, Smilax glabra roxb, codonopsi, ligusticum, Chuanxiong hort, Equus aainus linnaeus, honey.
As there are often many actions associated with each herb, when a person takes a variety of herbs at the same time there are many actions taking place. As such it can get complicated and without a full case history it can be difficult to determine how an individual will respond. Having said this, I would not expect a problem in the short term with the above combination.
There are other ways to increase iron levels in the body that may reduce a possible adverse effect with the medications you are taking. For example, yellow dock and molasses have been helpful with increasing iron levels and will not interfere with your blood pressure medications. However, I think that your underlying cause of the high blood pressure and low iron levels need to be addressed. It seems very likely to me that your digestive system and diet needs some attention.
