I have lymphedema of my right arm following removal of lymph nodes due to lumpectomy for breast cancer.I was told that sage might be useful in treating this condition by possibly cleansing the lymphatic system. Was wondering if any other herbs might be useful? I saw that red clover was suggested on one of the questions and answers.
Yes, red clover flowers are excellent lymphatic cleansers. Please see the item "lymphoedema" (the British spelling of lymphedema) in the Q&A section of our website www.richters.com .
Donald Yance, in his book "Herbal Medicine, Healing & Cancer" (Available at Richters), has found the following herbs and supplements helpful in lymphedema resulting from removal of lymph glands:
* Horse chestnut
* OPCs (Oligomeric proanthocyanidins derived from grape seed extract, red wine extract and/or pine bark extract)
* Bromelain
* Turmeric
Yance lists his dosage recommendations of each of the above supplements and additionally includes a specific herbal formula. He also recommends stimulating the lymph system and removal of waste material with a saltwater glow massage: using either a washcloth or loofah sponge, rub the entire body with salt water.
