I've been drinking a tea [product name deleted] that contains licorice root, peppermint, sweet fennel, and basil. Can any of these herbs cause depression? For the past month I've been crying over everything and generally depressed. I love the flavor of the tea because it tastes like there is sugar in it, but it's sugar free. But I'll throw it out because I can't handle these feelings.
Fennel and licorice root affect the sex hormones, which could be a factor in your depression. It is unusual for a tea made with these herbs to cause depression, but every person is unique. I suggest that you try another tea for a month and note the differences in your mood.
I see on the Internet that this product is no longer available, despite much promotion on the popularity and great taste. Maybe others had a problem with it as well.
