I have been using oregano oil to combat sinus and upper respiratory congestion. I use about 7 drops to a teaspoon of olive oil followed by a chaser of tomato juice (what a rush!). It does work really well, however I don't want to "over-do". Where can I find some reliable safety information? I feel that it could be toxic (to the liver?) so I try not to use it for extended periods of time. Is there another natural remedy that would work equally as well? (oregano oil tends to give immediate results). I just want to be sure I am not causing damage unwittingly.
Oregano oil is such a strong irritant to the mucous membranes. I don't know that there is reliable safety information available. You can find some information by searching Google for " "oil of oregano" safety". The facts are that it is a strong irritant and is known to have caused damage in some people
Please see the dietary and herbal advice listed on the Q&A section of our website www.richters.com . Changing to a mucus free diet, along with steam inhalations will give you quick results, especially if you use these methods as soon as you feel an infection coming on. Steam inhalations are effective with or without herbs in the water. The process is described on the Q&A our website. Enter "vapor" for the Q&A search. Search for other information by entering "respiratory" and "sinus" for the Q&A search.
