What herbs cause constipation?
Herbs that could cause constipation are those with an astringent action. If you find that a herb is causing constipation, you should stop using it or decrease the dosage.
Astringent herbs are used in diarrhea to contract the mucous membranes of the bowel to reduce excretions. The goal is not to produce constipation, but to return the bowel to normal functioning. Astringent herbs used for this purpose include agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) and meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), which is also anti-inflammatory and antacid.
