Please let me know what herb is pipsissewa? What is it used for? Is it for kidney/bladder problems? Enuresis? Bedwetting? Can it be taken in water or what other ways by mouth?
Mrs. Grieve, in "A Modern Herbal" says this about pipsisewa (Chimaphila umbellata): "Diuretic, astringent, tonic, alterative. The fresh leaves, when bruised and applied to the skin, act as vesicants and rubefacients, of great use in cardiac and kidney diseases, chronic rheumatism and scrofula. The decoction is advantageous for chronic gonorrhoea, strangury, catarrh of the bladder, and a good cure for ascites. It is said to diminish lithic acid in the urine; for dropsy it is useful combined with other medicines; it is a substitute for uva-ursi and less obnoxious; said to be of value in diabetes, but this has not yet been confirmed; and it is very efficacious for skin diseases."
It has a history of being used by Native Americans for urinary infections.
The leaves can be taken as a decoction (simmered in water), or made into an alcoholic tioncture.
If you have a kidney or bladder problem, I recommend that you consult with a qualified practioner before taking this herb. It is much safer to have a complete assessment and a holistic recommendation for herbs and diet that can solve the health problem.
