What herbs or natural preparations can be helpful for vasculitis and polyarteritis nodosa?
Vasculitis, is inflammation of a blood vessel. There is no serious problem if the blood vessel is a capillary. Inflammation of an artery, arteritis, can lead to blockage of an artery. Polyarteritis nodosa is an inflammation that is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, but affects the walls of the arteries rather than the joints. The cause is unknown, but it can be induced by drugs or bacteria.
The diet should be high in fresh, raw fruit and vegetables. Herbs that may be used include hawthorn to support the heart and blood vessels, meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) to decrease inflammation, prickly ash bark or berries (Zanthoxylum clavaherculis) to stimulate arterial and capillary circulation, and yarrow as both an anti-inflammatory and a dilator of blood vessels. Vitamin C with bioflavonoids nourishes the blood vessels. Vitamin E discourages blood clots.
