Is there a herb that cures scars caused by acne?
How can calendula be taken internally? How can it be applied to the skin? Can you suggest a home made tip regarding this or some other herb useful for acne prone and oily skins?
To heal scarring, Thomas Bartram, in "Bartram's Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" (available at Richters), recommends aloe vera, internally and externally, and vitamin E (500 i.u. to 1000 i.u. daily). Aloe vera gel is available in health food shops, or you can use the gel under the outer surface of a leaf of the fresh plant. Aloe is soothing, anti-bacterial and helps to eliminate toxins from the body. Applied externally, aloe helps to reduce oily skin secretions.
Bartram also notes that lavender essential oil is useful for scarring: add 3 drops of lavender essential oil to 2 teaspoons of almond or other vegetable oil; moisten gauze with this mixture and apply to your scars at night. Leave the lavender soaked gauze on your scars as long as possible - overnight if you can.
Calendula can be taken internally as an alcoholic tincture, purchased at a health food store, or as a tea. To make a tea, add one cup of boiling water to 1 - 2 teaspoons of dried calendula petals. Cover, and allow to steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink, 3 cups daily. Use the cooled calendula tea as a wash for your face, morning and evening. The cooled tea can be kept refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
Another useful wash for oily, acne-prone skin is fresh lemon juice. Cleanse your face with the juice morning and evening, then follow with an application of aloe vera gel.
