What is hyssop and what how does it affect the human body when taken orally.Hyssop, Hyssopus officinalis, is a bushy perennial plant that grows to two feet in height. The above ground parts of the plant are used medicinally. Its actions include: inducing sweating to reduce fevers, expectorant, diuretic, anti-spasmodic, and mild pain-reliever. It is commonly used in bronchitis, colds, fevers and sore throats. Its volatile oil is responsible for the anti-spasmodic effect that makes it especially useful in coughs and other bronchial conditions. Hyssop can be taken as a tea or an alcoholic tincture.
