I am wondering what side effects, if any, chickweed has on the body. I was diagnosed with hypertension and am currently seeing a cardiologist for regular check-ups to maintain my blood pressure. I am seeing my regular internist for check-ups. I don't know if race plays a part in the side effects, but I am a 39 year old Black woman. I weight lift 3 times a week. Please respond to let me know if there are any side effects.
As far as I know, chickweed has no side effects.
Chickweed contains saponins, which are soap-like substances that bond with both water and oil. This is why chickweed is sometimes used for weight loss - because of its "fat-dissolving" action. The "soapy" property also makes chickweed an effective soothing agent. It heals and soothes anything it comes in contact with. It is most often used externally, as a cooling salve for skin problems, but it is also useful internally for inflammation of the bronchial tract or digestive tract.
