Fennel Same as Licorice?

Do fennel capsules work the same as fennel seeds for flatulence? Also since it tastes somewhat like licrorice – does it have the same properties as licorice? I want to use it; however, I am not allowed licorice because I have hypertension. If it is not the same where can I get the seeds that are used to control flatulence?

Medicinally, fennel is completely different from licorice. The active compounds in the two herbs are completely different. Licorice works as a demulcent, laxative and expectorant because of its glycyrrhizin content, a compound that also happens to be sweet tasting. It is beneficial for digestive problems including flatulence. Fennel contains an essential oil that has carminative (anti-flatulent) properties.
I can't comment on whether fennel capsules are the same as fennel seeds because that depends on how the capsules are made. But fennel seeds are such a pleasure to chew on after a meal that you ought to try them. Fennel seeds are commonly offered after meals in India for their soothing effects on the digestive system. Restaurant patrons or house guests will be offered a bowl of fennel seeds from which they pick a few to pop in the mouth to chew on. Fennel seeds are available from Richters.
