Someone told me that several drops of Star of Bethlehem into lotion applied by massage onto sore muscles or other injuries can relieve pain and discomfort. Is this true?
Also, is there a natural and safe fat burning herb? I exercise daily and want to continue losing weight slowly and sensibly. I do cardio and weightlifting.
Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) is a member of the onion family. Maude Grieve, in "A Modern Herbal" (Penguin Books Ltd., 1980) describes its ancient use as a food. Thomas Bartram, in "Bartram's Encyclopedia of Herbal Medicine" (available at Richters) lists it as useful in peptic ulcers, and as an unproven cancer remedy. I don't know of its use for muscle pain. I might use a St. John's wort oil, Cayenne oil or a homeopathic preparation of Arnica cream for sore muscles.
For weight loss, please see previous answers to questions on our website at www.richters.com. Choose "Q&A" from the main menu, then choose "Search Richters Q&A", and enter the word "weight" for the search. Flax seed and oily fish, such as wild salmon, mackerel and sardines, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which help the body to burn excess fat. Saturated fats in meat and dairy should be minimized. Vegetable protein, tofu or a grain and legume combination, can take the place of meat in some meals. Fibre-rich fruit and vegetables should make up the major portion of your diet.
