I am currently using LorTabs for back pains and although they make me feel nauseous most of the time my doctor wants me to continue taking them for at least another 90 days. I was wondering if there is a all natural product that I could take that may have the same effects of this drug without the thought of continuous nausea.
It is usually important to relieve the pain, even if drugs must be used, so that healing can take place more quickly. Because of drug side effects, it's a good idea to look at alternatives, including chiropractors, osteopaths and exercise programs. I recommend that you use the following information in consultation with a health care provider because herbs that affect the nervous system will cause a greater (possibly dangerous) depression of the nervous system if used with your current medication, and if you plan to discontinue the medication, it should be discontinued gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Lortab medication includes an opiate to depress the nervous system response to pain and either aspirin or acetaminophen to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
Pain killing and anti-inflammatory herbs include Turmeric, Cayenne and Devil's Claw.
Herbal pain relievers that affect the nervous system include Skullcap, Hops, Passionflower, St. John's wort, Valerian and Wild Lettuce. St. John's wort has monoamine oxidase activity, which must be avoided while you are on your current medication because it may cause severe, unpredictable reactions. Once you are off the medication, an oil of St. John's Wort is an excellent external rub to relieve pain. Skullcap, Hops and Wild Lettuce are sleep inducing. Hops must not be used in depression as it can deepen the depression.
"Natural aspirin", herbs that contain salicylates, include White Willow bark, Meadowsweet and Wintergreen.
