What herb or herbs would you recommend for "shingles"?
Shingles, or Herpes Zoster, is a reactivation of the chicken pox virus, affecting the nerves. It causes pain and itching of the affected nerves.
Herbs that are anti-viral and pain relieving are effective. Anti-viral herbs are Calendula, Echinacea and garlic. Pain relievers and nerve sedatives are: St. John's Wort (also anti-viral), Valerian and Passionflower. Attention should be paid to nutrition and digestion so that the nutrients required for healing are provided.
Herpes Zoster is often triggered by stress and aggravated by foods such as citrus fruit, chocolate, dairy products, nuts, peanut butter and coffee.
