What does horse chestnut do for circulation in the feet and ankles?
Horse chestnut tones and strengthens the blood vessels, improving circulation. The vein walls become less permeable, inhibiting the leakage that causes edema, or swelling, in the feet and ankles. The capillary walls are strengthened, making drainage through them easier.
The main active constituent of horse chestnut, the saponin "aescin" has proven in studies to be extremely effective in preventing edema and in treating varicose veins and varicose ulcers.
