Can I use St.Johnswort, Hypericum perforatum, for treatment for my husband. He is a diabetic person. I just know it is very good for some infection. Is it true or else.
The following information is intended for your research and study only, and is not intended as medical advice. Your medical practitioner must be consulted regularly to monitor your blood sugar level and to advise you in the needs for your particular symptoms.
Hypericum, with its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, may be used to counteract infection in diabetes. Other herbs, that include immune stimulant and anti-bacterial properties, such as Echinacea and Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria), may be more useful.
In diabetes, herbs which promote circulation are often advised, such as Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacanthoides) and Ginkgo.
Daniel Mowrey, in "Proven Herbal Blends" (available at Richters), advises a blend that may help the body's ability to reduce high blood sugar and promote glandular health and function. This blend should not be used in kidney disease, hypoglycaemia, for persons using diuretics or who are run down. Since it is meant to reduce the blood sugar, frequent consultations with your doctor are necessary to measure blood sugar and adjust insulin intake requirements. The blend includes Uva Ursi, a diuretic tonic to strengthen liver and kidneys, Dandelion root , a hypoglycaemic and diuretic which promotes liver and pancreas function, Parsley, a diuretic that promotes liver function, Gentian root, which improves the function of liver, pancreas, gallbladder and kidneys, Saw Palmetto Berry to provide nutritional support to restore function of glands and organs, Huckleberry Leaf, Buchu Leaf, Kelp and Bladderwrack.
